How are Dental Implants Made?
Let’s face it – missing or severely damaged teeth can be a pain!
If you’ve been dealing with gaps or a damaged tooth that needs extraction, dental implants are an excellent tooth replacement solution you can consider. They are a strong and long-lasting fix that will look and feel just like your natural teeth.
Sounds impressive, doesn’t it? However, if you don’t know much about dental implants, it’s only natural to have a ton of questions like what materials are used in dental implants or how they are made.
These are all valid questions! After all, dental implants are a significant investment in your smile and health, and it’s only right you have the answers you need to ease those dental jitters. Our team is ready to take you behind the scenes on how dental implants are made.
What are Dental Implants Made From?
Before diving into the process of how dental implants are made, let’s take a look at the parts of a dental implant and the materials used. Basically, your dental implant includes 3 components:
The Implant Post
This is the screw that is surgically placed by our dentist into your jawbone. Crafted from biocompatible titanium, they are durable, strong and resistant to wear and corrosion. Plus, they bond really well with the bone! Think of it as the foundation for your new smile.
The Abutment
This tiny part acts like a connector, fusing the implant post and the dental prosthetic. Just like the post, it is also made from biocompatible titanium.
The Dental Prosthetic
This is the finishing touch, aka the false teeth placed on the abutment to restore a natural-looking smile. At Brisbane Implants, we only use the finest crowns from Australia’s leading dental laboratories which are well-known for their perfect blend of aesthetics and functionality. We offer three main types for you to choose from: fully milled Zirconia crowns, PFM crowns and all-resin or composite crowns.
A Step-by-Step Guide to How Dental Implants are Made
-
The process begins with a long titanium rod that’s fed into a machine that shapes it and cuts threads on the outside. These threads will act like anchors, helping secure the implant firmly into your jawbone.
Fun fact: did you know that hundreds of dental implants can be made from just one titanium rod?
-
Once the rod is shaped and threaded, it will be trimmed to the exact length needed for your implant.
-
Next, a drill is used to hollow out the rod and cut even more threads on the implant, this time on the inside. These internal threads will ensure that the dental prosthetic is held securely in place.
-
The implant is then put into a specialised cleaning machine that blasts it with solvent vapour, removing leftover oils from the cutting process.
-
After that, it undergoes a process called anodisation. This makes the surface of the implant more porous, which helps it integrate better with your jawbone. The implant also undergoes other surface treatments, such as blasting and acid-etching.
-
Finally, the implant is sterilised and cleaned before being sent to us so we can begin the dental implant procedure.
The implant also goes through multiple cleanings and inspections at various stages throughout the process. This ensures that every single implant meets the highest standards of quality and precision.
Now that you know how implants are made, let’s also take a look at what goes into the process of making dental crowns.
-
The first step involves getting dental impressions of your teeth. These impressions will serve as the blueprint for crafting your custom crowns (or bridges). At Brisbane Implants, we do this using a 3D scanner – a quicker and more accurate way to scan your entire mouth.
-
Then, the dental labs get to work on creating your customised Zirconia crowns. From the shade to shape and size, this crown will be designed to blend in seamlessly with your natural teeth.
There you have it – the process of creating dental implants. It's truly amazing to see the level of care that goes into crafting these tiny dental wonders.
