Who Is a Candidate for Dental Implants?

Missing teeth got you feeling down?

Every time you look in the mirror, you see only a fading memory of that confident grin you loved. Eating your favourite foods, like popcorn on a movie night will only leave you wincing in pain – robbing you of the simple pleasures and joy in life.

Leaving missing teeth untreated will only increase your troubles (from facial sagging to bone deterioration), but that’s where dental implants come in. They are a permanent tooth replacement solution that will restore not just your teeth but your smile, confidence and quality of life!

But wait a minute – are dental implants right for you? The key is to have enough bone density, healthy gums and good overall health! If you have some bone loss, don’t worry because we can fix that with a bone grafting procedure.

At Brisbane Implants, we can assess your oral health to determine if dental implants are the right choice for you!

Who Needs Dental Implants?

Dental implants are a versatile treatment for patients facing various dental problems. They may be the right option for you if you have:

  • Missing Teeth: Losing one tooth can be troublesome and embarrassing enough. Imagine missing multiple teeth. Implants can fill those gaps and restore your smile, whether you’re missing teeth due to injury or tooth decay.

  • Loose Dentures: Traditional dentures can become loose for multiple reasons like bone resorption (where bone tissue breaks down and is reabsorbed into the body), poor fit along with wear and tear. No matter the reason, loose dentures are not an ideal solution because they shift around and can be uncomfortable. Implants can save you from this embarrassment by offering a permanent and secure solution.

  • An Extracted Tooth: If you have a severely infected, cracked or broken tooth that cannot be saved, tooth extraction will be the last resort. After extraction, we will place a dental implant which will help you smile confidently and eat comfortably.

  • Loose Dental Bridge: A loose bridge poses the same trouble as a loose denture. Dental implants can be your bridge over troubled waters.

  • Sunken Facial Appearance: Bone loss from missing teeth can lead to facial sagging, making you look a little older. Dental implants can stimulate your jawbone and give your face the support it needs to restore that youthful appearance.

Am I Eligible for Dental Implants?

Wondering if dental implants are the answer to a complete and functional smile?

Whether you're missing one tooth or need a major smile makeover, dental implants might be your perfect match.

Typically, dental implants are an excellent solution for most people. However, there are a few things to consider. At Brisbane Implants, our dentists will perform a comprehensive oral assessment to see if implants are a good fit. Here’s what we’ll be checking:

Bone Density

Since dental implants fuse with the jawbone, it's crucial for the bone to be strong enough to support them. Think of it like having a solid foundation for a building. That’s why we assess your jawbone density to ensure it’s ready for implants. If not, our bone graft procedure will help improve bone density. But here’s the deal – bone grafts aren’t for everyone. If that’s the case, we’ll recommend alternative tooth replacement options to get your smile brimming with confidence again.

Gum Disease

Just like a solid foundation, healthy gums are essential for implant success. If you have gum disease or are at risk of developing it, there’s a greater risk of implant failure or complications.

If we find any signs of gum disease during your consultation, we’ll treat it first. Then, your healthy gums can better support your implants.

Age

While you are never too old for dental implants, younger folks may have to wait longer. Why? Because, unlike your natural teeth that move and erupt while your jaw grows, implants don’t move at all.

So, if we insert an implant in a young jaw that’s still growing, it might look shorter than the neighbouring teeth. So, we typically recommend waiting until around 18 or over for implants (*This can vary based on individual circumstances).

If you need to get your tooth replaced while your jaw is still growing, we can try to maintain the natural tooth until it stops growing. If not, we will recommend other options, like removable dentures or bridges, to keep your smile gap-free.

Overall Health and Habits

Implants are an excellent solution, but they work best when your health is in tip-top shape. Diseases such as diabetes, cancer and autoimmune diseases can make healing from implant surgery a bit tricky.

Smoking and tobacco products are also a big no-no if you want implants as it can slow down the healing process and increase the risk of complications. Quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health and smile!

Oral Health and Hygiene

Taking care of your smile is key to implant success. If you are already brushing and flossing your teeth (good job!), then you are well on your way to getting dental implants.

While dental implants may not be for everyone, for the right candidates, implants can be a game-changer. Think strong, long-lasting tooth replacements that lock in that confident smile you desire and deserve!
